Emergency Steel Scrap Coalition Formed

Thursday March 11, 2004
The Emergency Steel Scrap Coalition has been formed by a group of steel manufacturers and consumers to address a steel scrap export crisis.

Scrap exports from the United States have doubled since 2000. This sharp increase in steel scrap exports has caused U.S. steel scrap prices to surge to unprecedented levels, and has led to serious concerns about scrap shortages.

Scrap shortages are having significant, harmful effects on important manufacturing sectors of the U.S. including the two mainstays of the national economy; construction and automotive manufacturing.
