The 2013 Range Rover, which will be at dealerships later this year, will be the first SUV to have an all aluminum unibody chassis.
In fact, following Jaguar's lead with its design of the XJ series, the vehicle's entire framework will be made from aluminum.
The changeover to aluminum, which is one-third the weight of steel, produces serious weight savings. Depending on the exact model specifications, 2013 Range Rovers will be between 700 and 1000lbs (317-453kgs) lighter than previous models.
The folks at Land Rover are hoping that this not only results in greater fuel efficiency, but also finally produces a Range Rover with highway performance and handling that suits the price tag.
