Company Profile: ArcelorMittal

ArcelorMittal S.A. is the world’s largest steel producer, accounting for more than 6% of global crude steel production. Headquartered in Luxembourg, ArcelorMittal has operations in over 60 countries and annual gross revenues in excess of US$ 70 billion (2010).

History:

ArcelorMittal formed in 2006 as a result of the takeover of Arcelor by Mittal Steel.

Mittal Steel was founded in 1989 by Mr. Lakshimi N. Mittal and grew steadily through the execution of numerous international acquisitions. Arcelor, meanwhile, was created in 2002 following the merging of Aceralia, Arbed and Usinor, three European steel-making companies. When acquired by Mittal in 2006 Arcelor was the world’s second largest producer of steel.

After the formation, ArcelorMittal continued the consolidation strategy that led to the earlier success of Mittal with 35 acquisitions in 2007.

Products:

ArcelorMittal produces and sells a complete range of steel products including commodity steels, value-added products, long and flat products, standard and specialty steels, carbon steel, stainless steel and alloys. The company's products are primarily used in the automotive, construction, household appliances, and packaging industries.

With 26 mines in operation and development, ArcelorMittal is also one of the world's largest iron ore and metallurgical coal producers.

Financial Summary (2010):

ArcelorMittal has an annual steel production capacity of approximately 130 million tonnes and, in 2010, produced nearly 91 million tonnes of crude steel. Of this, flat products (automotive steels) accounted for 57% of shipments and long products (rebars, sections and beams) accounted for about 27% .

Steel was produced in Europe (53%), the Americas (36%) and elsewhere (11%), including Kazakhstan, South Africa and Ukraine.

Steel Operations:

The company’s operations are divided into six parts:

  1. Flat Carbon Americas
  2. Flat Carbon Europe
  3. Long Carbon Americas
  4. Long Carbon Europe
  5. AACIS, Stainless Steel
  6. Distribution Solutions.

Flat Carbon Americas includes carbon steel slabs, hot or cold rolled coil, coated steel products and plate produced in the Americas. Flat carbon steels are used mainly in distribution and processing, automotive parts, pipes and tubes, construction, packaging, and appliances. Production facilities include integrated and mini-mill sites found in four countries.

Flat Carbon Europe includes carbon steel slabs, hot or cold rolled coil, coated products, plate, as well as tinplate produced in Europe. Flat carbon steels are used mainly in distribution and processing, automotive parts, pipes and tubes, construction, packaging, and appliances. Production facilities include integrated and mini-mill sites found in six countries.

Long Carbon Americas and Europe produces long carbon steel sections, wire rod, rebars, billets, blooms, wire drawing, and pipes and tubes. Production facilities include integrated and mini-mill sites found in fifteen countries.

AACIS (Asia, Africa and Commonwealth of Independent States) operations produce both flat and long products, with facilities located in three countries.

Stainless Steel production includes flat and long stainless steel and alloy products manufactured in three countries in Europe and South America. The products are used in domestic equipment, automotive industry, construction, and general appliances.

Mining:

In 2010 ArcelorMittal mined 68.6 million tonnes of iron ore and over 7 million tonnes of coking and thermal coal. ArcelorMittal uses its iron ore and coal assets to provide security of supply and as a hedge against raw material price volatility.
